SJSU Wellness Center
An important aspect in a college students daily life is health. Therefore it is vital to
maintain good physical and mental health. For students currently enrolled at
SJSU the student wellness center gives free primary care because SJSU student
fees pay for the basic services provided. With students that go to school full time or have a
job it may be hard to find time to schedule an appointment but now you can make
appointments online to save you time. With all the benefits that the student
wellness center provides it would be idiotic not to use the resources that you
are already paying for.
Where is the Wellness Center located?
The location of the student wellness center at SJSU is located on El Paseo De Caesar E. Chavez across from the Event Center.
How to schedule an appointment?
You
can make appointments in person on the first floor of the student wellness
center. If you are a first time user you will need to fill new patient forms. If
you cannot make an appointment in person you can make one online using the
student wellness center website. (http://www.sjsu.edu/studenthealth/)
You should
arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and expect to be in the student
wellness center for 60 minutes. A photo ID is required at every Student health
center visit. Same day appointments are for students who require medical
attention on the day the appointment is made. Appointments that are canceled,
missed or rescheduled will be charged a Missed Appointment Fee.
What does the SWC offer?
Services range from skin issues to genital issues and physical exams. The clinical staff includes 7 doctors and 3 Nurse Practitioners. Specialty services like dermatology and others come at a low cost. Transgender services are also included at student wellness center. Additional services such as x-rays, immunizations, pharmacy, and laboratory charge a small nominal fee.

Free Primary Care
Students
who have paid the Mandatory
Health Fee are allowed to have unlimited primary care visits. Primary care
includes illness and injury treatments such as infections, care for flu, cuts,
and sprains. Preventative medicine such as nutritionist and health educators is
available for dieting and counseling. Women can have free gynecological
evaluations and treatments as well as contraception counseling. Primary care
also includes AIDS and HIV information. Confidential HIV testing is $8 at the
student health center.

Immunizations & Vaccines
The
student health center also provides many immunizations and vaccines that will
help protect you from the diseases and flu’s that an average college student
encounters. Flu shots for SJSU students are $11 and this shot protects against
the three major types of flu that research suggest will be most common. The
whooping cough or TDAP vaccine is $22 for SJSU students. Other vaccines such as
hepatitis, MMR, Gardasil, HPV, and travel vaccines are also provided to
students at the student wellness center.
Speciality Services
These services usually require a referral from the wellness center clinicians
or counseling
services required. These specialty services require a nominal fee. Dermatology is one of the
special services and appointments are only available by referral from wellness
center clinicians. The dermatologist provides examinations, treatment, and
minor surgery for skin problems. Sports medicine is for sport related injuries
and orthopedic problems. A referral by a wellness center clinician is not
required for sports medicine. Psychiatry is available for people who have been
given a referral by a wellness center clinician. Travel care is also provided
as a special service. Those who plan to travel abroad can schedule a
comprehensive travel health consultation. The appointment for a travel consultation
is about 45 minutes and it will cost you $13.
Health for All
Here
at SJSU we are a very accepting and diverse campus that comes from many
different places. We are accepting of our LGBT community and pride community.
We have bathrooms acceptable to everyone from the LGBT community. At the
student wellness center they provide sensitive and confidential transgender
services. Services available included prescribing hormonal therapy,
transferring pre-existing prescriptions to the student wellness center, and
training for testosterone and estrogen injections.
Additional Services
Additional
services included at the student wellness center are a pharmacy, laboratory,
physical therapy, x-rays, physical examinations, allergies, ADHD and ADD. The pharmacy fills prescriptions only prescribed
by an U.S. physician. Over the counter drugs are also available at the student
wellness center. Students who have been diagnosed for ADD/ADHD who want a
refill must provide complete documentation of there prescription. The student
wellness center does not provide allergy testing or allergy shot
administration. In order to be able to on a maintenance dosage regimen they
will need a clearly prescribed allergy injection schedule by their allergist
and must make an appointment with the student wellness center Medical Chief of
Staff for approval before starting. Physical therapy is another benefit that
the student wellness center provides. Physical therapy includes soft tissue and
joint mobilization, ultrasound, electro-stimulation, and exercise programs for
rehabilitation. Also you can rent a free
crutch or cane from the student wellness center. It is $5 per visit for
physical therapy appointments.
Take Advantage
The
student wellness center has amazing services and I think everyone should try to
take advantage of this resource at SJSU. It is vital to be healthy physically
and mentally in order for you to succeed and learn in school. And the student
wellness center is one of the many key resources at San Jose State University to
being a successful student.
